Spectacular Seaside Golf

Meandering among sweeping sand dunes along 17-Mile Drive, The Links at Spanish Bay unveils some of the most spectacular seaside views in Pebble Beach. The rolling fairways flow through and around the gorgeous dunescape, briefly weaving between towering Monterey Pines, before returning to the white sand of Spanish Bay Beach for a thrilling finish along the wind-swept coast.

A twilight round is punctuated by the tunes of the famed Spanish Bay bagpiper, who puts the course to bed every evening.

Spanish Bay is ranked among the best public courses in the state and the country, and annually hosts the pros during the TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational.

Par 5
1
500 yds
To the Sea
The tee shot is inviting, with an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean beyond the green. A good drive can create a difficult decision: take on the dunes and go for the green? Or lay up safely to the left? Keep in mind that a deep swale bites into the right side of the green.
Par 4
2
308 yds
Straight and Narrow
This tee shot is often aided by an ocean breeze, making it that much more tempting to swing away with driver and knock it near the green. But the simple shot is laying up to 100 yards, setting up an approach to a  green that is divided by four tricky compartments.
Par 4
3
344 yds
Pitch and Run
Aim at the left pot bunker — or even the adobe beach house in the distance — to give yourself a short shot into the green. But if the wind is up, carry whatever bunker you can off the tee to set up an approach that you can run into the green.
Par 3
4
185 yds
Shepherd's Haven
The green tucked into sand dunes features three distinct tiers, demanding a precise shot — as well as a good yardage.
Par 4
5
454 yds
Blind Choice
Three pot bunkers in the middle of the fairway force a tough decision off the tee. Play to the wider left side and set up a long second shot to a raised green? Or go for the skinny right side to leave a more manageable approach? Either way, you will need a great shot to make par here.
Par 4
6
397 yds
Sandy
Eight bunkers down the right side of the hole discourage you from taking a short cut. The textbook way to play this hole is a drive at the 150-yard marker in the fairway, setting up an uphill approach into a rolling, multi-tiered green.
Par 4
7
423 yds
Left Begone
Another tough decision is presented off the tee, as the fairway bottlenecks the farther you hit it. The fairway is at its widest some 200 yards from the green, before marsh eats into the left side of the hole. The right side of the green sits on a higher tier than the left.
Par 3
8
160 yds
Marsh Corner
Marsh, a ring of bunkering and a freshening ocean breeze already make this a difficult tee shot. Then add in three very different pin placements on a green shaped like a saddle, and it's an impressive feat to knock one close here.
Par 4
9
390 yds
White Dune
The sand dune along the right side is out of bounds, and marsh borders the left edge of the hole, turning this fairway into one of the toughest to hit on the course. Understanding the hole location is important. The green is one of the deepest on the course, although a swale eats into the right side of it.
Par 5
10
510 yds
Half & Half
Finding the right line off the tee is key. A drive that carries the sand dunes can make this par-5 reachable, but be aware that the fairway shrinks significantly. Three pot bunkers also divide the layup. The green slopes from right-to-left, feeding down to a bottom tier.
Par 4
11
376 yds
Top Hat
This short par-4 turns hard right, finishing at an elevated green raised like a top hat. Drives can creep close to the green, but it might be more comfortable to lay back and hit a full shot from the fairway to better hold the top tier.
Par 4
12
425 yds
Cathedral
It's important to find the fairway on this tight tee shot, as the green sits across the other side of a ravine. Once you've reached the green, you'll notice that it's one of the quickest on the course, with putts racing toward the ocean, which comes into view once again.
Par 3
13
124 yds
Wee Precipice
This tiny shot over a ravine demands precision. It's usually into an ocean breeze, and the green slopes severely from back-to-front, a combination that can send your ball spinning off the putting surface if you don't take enough club.
Par 5
14
567 yds
Wind & Willow
This downhill par-5 straight to Asilomar Beach can be a challenge to reach in regulation if you're facing a stiff ocean breeze. Note that out-of-bounds looms left and marsh lines the entire right side of the hole.
Par 4
15
392 yds
Missing Link
The fairway wraps around two bunkers, but the prudent play is to aim left of them toward the 150-yard marker. From there, be aware that a swale bites into the left side of the green — the inverse of what you encountered at No. 1.
Par 3
16
200 yds
Dune Hollow
This scenic green tucked into sand dunes is bisected by a giant vertical hump. If the wind is blowing, it may be safest to find the left side of the green, no matter where the hole is located.
Par 4
17
402 yds
Whale Watch
Similar to the 15th hole, the tee shot is a layup to the end of the fairway. The two-tiered green, however, slopes severely from left-to-right.
Par 5
18
582 yds
Long Home
The final hole is bisected by a hazard, giving players one final decision in their round: fire directly at the green, or lay up right to the wide fairway. If it helps, the two-tiered green is easier to hold from a shorter distance.

  • From an Abandoned Sand Mine to This

After watching his father build a links experience through the dunes of Spyglass Hill for its first five holes, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. wanted to do the same — but for 18. He had the unique opportunity to do so just a couple courses down 17-Mile Drive when an abandoned sand mine became available at what is now The Links at Spanish Bay.
