Bertha Benz was just as responsible for the launch of Benz as her husband Karl. She invested her own money into the company, tested the car and changed the design in many ways and their success was a team effort. 130 years ago this month, she was the first person ever to drive a car a long distance. She and her two young sons traveled 65 miles each way in the Benz Patent- Motorwagen to visit her mother and without the knowledge of Karl. It was not an easy trip since there were no paved roads and the terrain was challenging. She ran low on fuel and had to source petroleum solvent from a local pharmacy used to run the car. She made an emergency repair to a clogged fuel line with her hairpin and even stopped at a local cobbler to change the wooden brakes to leather. After the voyage, she helped redesign the gear system for climbing hills. With that historic trip, she proved to her husband Karl that his invention (and their investment) was ready for the market and proved to the average person that the automobile was a viable alternative to horses for transportation. Today, on the Women’s Equality Day, I had the honor of riding in the Motorwagen alongside Dietmar Exler, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Thank you Dietmar for the invite and to Mike, the head of Classic Center and to his team in getting the Motorwagen running to perfection. @mbusa @mercedesbenz @mbclassiccenter @mercedesbenzmuseum @themercedesbenzclub @mercedesbenzclubamerica @mercedesbenzusa @christian.boucke @pebblebeachconcours @pebblebeachlodge @amgsocallounge @3pointsocialclub @mbca_channelislands @mbca_la @womenbehind_thewheel @drivenwomenmag #mercedes #mercedesbenz #patentmotorwagen #mbusa #womanequalityday #womensequalityday #berthabenz #pebblebeach #lodgeatpebblebeach #women_behind_the_wheel #concoursdelegance #happy #honored #blessed #lovemercedesbenz❤️ #berthathebrave
