Reflecting on Another Year of Pebble History

For 105 years, Pebble Beach has served as the canvas for some of the most iconic, high-profile moments in golf. Whether it be Jack Nicklaus’ famed 1-iron into the 17th in 1972, or Allisen Corpuz making history as the first U.S. Women’s Open champion at Pebble Beach, history has been and continues to be made on these grounds. However, when the camera towers are taken down and the broadcast booth moves out, quieter but equally impactful moments are unfolding each and every day around these grounds. Engagements, anniversaries, family getaways – you name it, and it’s happened here. And whether these moments are broadcast for the entire world to see, or they transpire in a private moment, without them, Pebble Beach is nothing more than a place.

So, as another year winds to a close, let us take a look back at the moments that made 2024 another memorable chapter in the history of this place that is so special to so many.

The AT&T Pro-Am needs no introduction. One of the longest running events on TOUR, the list of champions over the years reads like a Hall of Fame ballot. Woods, Mickelson, Miller, Watson, Crenshaw, Nicklaus, Nelson and Hogan. But 2024 brought something different with a field like never before. 47 of the top 50 players made their way to Pebble Beach for a week that had a major championship type feel.

Leading into Thursday’s opening round, all the buzz centered around the heavyweights – Scheffler, Schauffele, Morikawa, McIlroy. Through the first two rounds, Scheffler would charge out to a share of the lead at 11-under alongside a couple of promising European prospects in Thomas Detry and Ludvig Aberg. But the weekend would belong to mother nature, and no one capitalized on the circumstances quite like Wyndham Clark.

The reigning U.S. Open champion began his third round six shots off the pace, but quickly thrust himself into the mix making the turn in 8-under 28. Clark would follow this up by coming home in four-under 32 including a closing birdie which propelled him into the Pebble Beach history books. His final tally of 12-under 60 is the lowest in the history of Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The elements had their say in the final result, washing out what was set to be a tense final round leaving Clark at the top for his third career PGA TOUR win. Early Monday morning he was presented with the trophy in a tournament first, as the presentation took place inside the Fairway One building.

For all the circles on Clark’s scorecard during that historic round, it was a bogey on the par-3 12th that proved to be key in sustaining his momentum. Met with a challenging lie, he was forced to flip his club and play from just off the green left-handed – a feat that some of Pebble Beach’s own staff attempted to recreate a few days later.

With spring came the return of one of the resorts most beloved events, Pebble Beach Food & Wine. On a hiatus since 2019, anticipation was high, and the week did nothing to disappoint. With an all-star cast of sommeliers, chefs and mixologists, the event was literally and metaphorically the toast of the town, drawing rave reviews and attendees from far and wide.

At the heart of Pebble Beach Food & Wine is the Tasting Pavilion which is the proverbial ‘cherry on top.’ In the spirit of marking the return of the event, a Cypress Tree was planted at the center of the Pavilion and on display throughout the weekend. Upon the conclusion of PBFW, staff members transported the tree to the opening hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links where it now guards the right side and will overlook players beginning their rounds for years to come.

Pebble Beach is no stranger to celebrities. Look no further than the history of the Crosby Clambake for proof of this place’s allure to the rich and famous. But in May, Pebble Beach turned into an impromptu set for the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as Pebble Beach, TaylorMade, KITH and Fallon launched a pop-up shop with unique co-branded apparel.

Lights, camera, action.

While Hollywood stars moonlight at Pebble Beach often, it’s those that are here each and every day that are the heartbeat of the resort and make it tick. In tandem with adidas Golf, Pebble Beach set out to highlight some of the people who hold some of the most unique positions on property – like Cade, who drives the range picker.

The sixth hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links is breathtaking in every sense and in many instances, the first ‘Wow’ moment as players are greeted with a coast-lined risk-reward par-5 featuring a three-story climb to an elevated fairway. This summer, we temporarily closed the green to make some improvements that among other things, restored a front-left hole location that had been lost over time.

Just up the road, the sixth green at Spyglass Hill underwent it’s own set of changes.

There is only one day each year when no golf shots are played at Pebble Beach Golf Links, for this to be the case, the circumstances must be more than outstanding. The Concours d’Elegance fits that description in every way and on one Sunday each August, the world’s most iconic golf course closes down to host the world’s most stunning collection of automobiles.

The first edition of the event was held in 1950 and over the more than seven decade long history, no preservation car had claimed the coveted honor of ‘Best In Show.’ That changed in 2024 as the 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports shown by Fritz Burkard of The Pearl Collection was judged to stand alone from a field that drew 214 cars from 16 countries and 29 states.

For all the spectacular golf that has been played here, it was Tiger Woods back in 2000 who authored the most dominant championship performance not only in Pebble Beach history, but in the history of major championship golf. In the 100th playing of the U.S. Open, Woods posted a 12-under total to win by a margin of 15-shots, a record that still stands today.

Of course, Woods hoisted that trophy in his signature red and black ensemble which served as the inspiration for his new line of apparel, Sun Day Red. The line took the golf world by storm when it launched in February of 2024 and in October, fittingly the brand launched its first brick and mortar shop at Pebble Beach, where a young Woods ushered in a new era in spectacular fashion as only he could.

Many of the game’s greats have had their signature moments at Pebble Beach, but none have amassed the resume of ‘The Prince of Pebble’ Mark O’Meara. Over a 12-year span O’Meara would win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am a record five times including back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990.

At this year’s PGA TOUR Champions event, the PURE Insurance Championship, The Prince bid farewell to professional golf at a place where he has carved out an unparalleled legacy. Supported by family, friends, and a loyal fanbase, O’Meara closed out a career that will never be duplicated.

2025 has plenty to live up to after the year that was. But if the last 105 years have been any indication, anything and everything is possible at Pebble.
