Centennial Year in Review: The 5 Most Exciting Moments of 2019
What an amazing year it’s been at Pebble Beach Resorts! We celebrated the Pebble Beach Centennial by reliving the many milestones of the company’s storied heritage, and hit new milestones along the way. Here’s a recap of the most exciting moments from this special year:
1. A New Wall of Champions is Unveiled
Standing proudly behind the first tee at Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Wall of Champions was built to commemorate past champions at Pebble Beach and pay homage to the golf course’s historic legacy.
2. Gary Woodland is Crowned 2019 U.S. Open Champion
Gary Woodland’s name was added to the Wall of Champions after winning the 2019 U.S. Open. Woodland put on a historic performance, besting defending back-to-back U.S. Open Champion and 2019 runner-up Brooks Koepka with a total score of 13-under. His second-round 6-under 65 tied the U.S. Open course record, previously set by Tiger Woods during his dominant 2000 U.S. Open win.
This was the sixth U.S. Open Championship to be held at Pebble Beach Golf Links, more than any other golf course in the past half-century.
3. Improvements are Made at Spyglass Hill
Improvements including a renovated 17th green and facility upgrades enhanced an already world-class experience at Spyglass Hill in 2019. The course was ranked within the top ten Best Public Course in the country by Golf Digest.
4. Pebble Beach Named No. 1 Golf Resort
It’s a place built for enjoying incredible natural beauty. As a result, there’s a timeless quality to the resort — and far more than just golf.
Golf Magazine ranked Pebble Beach as its No. 1 Resort for Luxury in its inaugural listing of Top 100 Resorts in North America. The magazine cited the resort’s natural beauty, excellent golf and attention to detail among the attributes that earned this top ranking.
5. Tiger Woods Signs On to Design New Short Course
To put the cherry on top of its Centennial Year, Pebble Beach announced a partnership with Tiger Woods and his TGR Design firm to design a new short course on the former site of Peter Hay Golf Course. The project will aim to elevate the year-round quality of the short course to that of the other Pebble Beach golf courses, leverage the first-class amenities of the adjacent Pebble Beach Golf Academy, and offer an incredible food and beverage venue with expansive ocean views. The process is expected to take less than a year to complete, with a Grand Reopening targeted for the fall of 2020.
Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating the Pebble Beach Centennial in 2019, and cheers to the next 100 years of once-in-a-lifetime moments!
